Language Camp

Bad Laasphe

For the first 3 weeks in Germany I was at a language camp in Bad Laasphe, which is a smart town 2 hours north of Frankfurt. I was staying and studying at Schloss Wittengstein.. basically a castle on teh top of a mountain in the middle of the Black Forest. The town was at teh bottom of the mountain, it was pretty much one long street with some stores! It was so much fun.. I was with the 49 other students from the Southeast that got accepted.. well 48 by the end because one girl went home (family issues and grade transfers)
Max the egg

the first task we had was called Max the Egg.. we were split into groups of 5 and given an egg with a pretty little face drawn on it. We had to go into town and see what we could trade for the egg.. we had to keep trading until we thought we had the ultimate bargain.. this was comical.. I had no idea it would actually work.. First: we ended up at a Chinese restaurant...with the language barrier we almost got 2 chinese kids- but we settled for two fortune cookies instead! We ended up wtih a huge Milka bar...some panty hose.. and a few other small things.. We were beat by the group who traded their egg for a cigarette, then a beer, then 20 beers, then a BIKE.. yes a bike...

The Deutsch Haus

This is the only bar in Bad Laasphe.. where many... had their first alcoholic beverage and German partying 101. Some hit a brick wall.. while others danced the night away. My good friend David Dyer was drinking his first beer.. I asked him how it was and he responded with "It tasted like piss water...so I chugged it." It was great.. the whole town looked forward to our Friday/Saturday night outings because it was the most excitement that town has ever seen.

Sophie

Sophie was my first friend in this program.. we met in DC and sat by each other on the bus and during every outing. She is from North Carolina. At first she seemed really reserved and quiet.. but after getting to know her and rooming with her at Language camp.. she is quite the opposite. I was so lucky to get such a kickass room mate. On the way to Frankfurt.. she looks at me and goes (in a Southern, not-Sophie voice) " we are going to paint this town RED,WHITE,and BLUE!!"imagine a tiny, half Philippine, girl saying this.. it's pretty funny. Sophie is what I miss most from Language Camp... we still talk all the time though...I even stuffed her in my suit case!

Mima

Mima was my teacher at language camp...she was awesome!! we had a small class.. but we learned a lot and had fun while doing it.
